I would like to thank my County Commissioner, Michael Naft for introducing the new pet store ordinance, as well as all the commissioners who voted unanimously to approve a much needed change. New York recently became the sixth state to prohibit the sale of puppies, cats and rabbits in pet stores. Dozens of puppy-selling franchises currently operate in New York, and they’ll have to convert to a humane business model.
There are an estimated 10,000 puppy mills in the United States. These commercial breeding facilities churn out puppies for retail pet stores as well as online and direct-to-public sales, such as classified ads, with little regard for where the animals go or where they end up.
With an overpopulation pet crisis in Las Vegas, our county commissioners took a step forward to help both animals and people.
