This celebration is a tribute to traditional culture through immersive storytelling, live music, crafts, dance, and activities.

Indigenous American Heritage Celebration 2022

Event Schedule:

Healing music Native Flute and Acoustic Guitar (10 am)

A blend of traditional and contemporary styles to create elegant Native American music.

Family Dance Presentation (11 am)

A blend of dances, songs, and storytelling from across Arizona celebrates the historical relationship between Native people and the land. This performance includes a phenomenal Hoop Dance by 2021 World Champion Hoop Dancer Tony Duncan.

“Let’s Hoop Dance!” (Noon)

Participants can appreciate the hoop dance by learning the techniques and being able to create up to 3 hoop picture combinations. The Hoop Dance is believed to have originated from the Taos Pueblo of New Mexico. The Hoop Dance celebrates the beauty of life.

Talking Feather Workshop (12:30 pm)

Many Native Nations used the Talking Feather to ensure that each person who wished to speak was heard during essential meetings or gatherings.

Stories of Creation Storytelling (1 pm)

Listen to the creation stories and songs from all across Turtle Island.

Mask Making Workshop (1:30 pm)

Participants learn to make a take-home mask craft. Each animal created in this mask-making workshop comes from the traditional stories shared in the presentations.

Storytelling with Larger-than-Life Masks (2 pm)

A collection of traditional and contemporary styles of dance from across Native America Featuring Kehewin Native Dance Theatre is sharing trickster stories told with the use of larger-than-life masks.

Family Dance Presentation (3 pm)

A blend of dances, songs, and storytelling across Arizona celebrates the historical relationship between Native people and the land. This performance includes a phenomenal Hoop Dance by 2021 World Champion Hoop Dancer Tony Duncan.
