Haryana govt approves DPR for Metro extension between Palam Vihar in Gurugam and Dwarka Sector 21 in Delhi

In a move that will boost metro connectivity for the Gurugram and Delhi residents, the Haryana government approved the final detailed project report (DPR) of the metro rail from Rezangla Chowk in Gurugram’s Palam Vihar to Sector 21 in Dwarka, New Delhi.

According to an official spokesperson, the spur, or the metro extension, will cover a length of 8.4 km, with a four-km stretch from Palam Vihar to Gurugram’s Sector 111 and the remaining stretch of 4.40 km will connect sector 111 to sector 21 Dwarka. The metro route will comprise seven metro stations.

A proposal has been made for an interchange at Rezangla Chowk in Palam Vihar to enable connectivity with the main Gurugram Metro line, linking Huda City Centre station to Cyber City through Old Gurugram and Palam Vihar.

The Haryana cabinet also gave the nod for the gross project cost of Rs 1,687 crore and the state government’s share of Rs 1,541 crore, while the centre will bear the remaining project cost. It also gave the approval to nominate the administrative secretary, town and country planning department as nodal officer for signing agreements and related documents for the project implementation.

According to Haryana chief minister, Manohar Lal Khattar, the metro project is expected to improve connectivity between Gurugram and Delhi, allowing smooth travel between the two cities for thousands of commuters. He added that the metro extension would reduce the use of buses, intermediate public transport (IPT), and private vehicles and reduce air pollution.

This Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) project will interchange with Palam Vihar station of the Gurugram metro corridor, with IECC station of the airport express metro corridor and with Sector 21 Dwarka station of Delhi metro’s blue line and airport express metro corridor. It will also have an interchange point with Dwarka Expressway at Sector 110A. This will help passengers commuting to Delhi international airport as a check-in facility will be given at Sector 21 Dwarka metro station.

For the development of the metro extension, there is an additional land requirement of two hectares in Sector 101. The DPR projects a need for about 60,000 square metres of land for building metro stations, platforms, entry and exit structures, power lines and other civil works. The proposal will be sent to the union government for the next round of approvals, Ajit Balaji Joshi, managing director of Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation Limited (HMRTC), said. He added that approvals from the Delhi government would be sought for setting up metro stations and other infrastructure.
