Debt relief not always needed

With a new speaker of the House in place, a lot of people think one of the first orders of business will be to expel Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y.

Santos (alias “Anthony Zabrovsky”; alias “Delio da Câmara da Costa Alemão”) is a self-admitted small-time con man recently elected to Congress to represent parts of Long Island and Queens. Of course, he admitted to these character flaws after he was elected and his lies were discovered.

The list of his alleged sins includes making false claims about his employment history, biography, religion, education, ancestry, and name(s). Oh, and he admitted to being wanted on check fraud charges in Brazil, although in his defense, he claims, “I’m not a wanted criminal in any jurisdiction.”

That’s about to change. Brazil has reopened its fraud case against Santos and he is now under investigation in the U.S. by federal, state and county authorities for other alleged crimes. So I guess Congress will demonstrate its integrity and oust him, which the House can do with a two-thirds majority vote.

Wrong. Republican leaders, faced with the option of welcoming an admitted criminal, will greet Santos with open arms: They want his vote. So much for expulsion and so much for integrity.

Santos has proudly declared he is the “embodiment of the American dream.” Apparently he’s right.
