In the latest efforts from CCSD Union teachers to cause chaos at schools throughout the Las Vegas valley, classes were abruptly canceled at two more Clark County School District campuses this Friday, causing growing concern among parents about what’s going on in the school system.
Principals from both Linda Rankin Givens Elementary and C.T. Sewell Elementary schools sent letters to parents that there was “an unexpected number of licensed staff/teachers absent from school today.” Consequently, they had no option but to shut down the schools.
Earlier in the week, the district had released a statement in the context of the closure at Gibson, stating that students of the Clark County School District “should not be used as bargaining leverage by [the Clark County Education Association] or its members.” The declaration highlights the current tense relations between the district and the education association amidst ongoing collective bargaining discussions.
Three other schools had to close earlier this weeks, after teachers at Gibson Elementary in Henderson, Southeast Career Technical Academy, and Monaco Middle School in Las Vegas used similar tactics in an attempt to force the schools to close.
In the wake of Governor Joe Lombardo’s controversial decision to allocate over two billion dollars to failing schools, critics argue this recent event is yet another glaring example to the governor’s flawed policy and misplaced priorities. This move, which channeled a massive amount of taxpayer funds into the Clark County School District (CCSD), along with how he traded votes for a stadium over kids, are now under heavy scrutiny, as many question whether the investment has brought about any improvements or has simply emboldened radicalized teachers groups to leverage threats against the education system for their benefit.
