4 Tips for Using Concrete in Construction Projects

By Lizzie Weakly

Concrete is one of the most commonly used materials in construction projects. It’s versatile, durable and relatively inexpensive, which makes it a great choice for a variety of applications. But if you’re not careful, concrete can also be a source of stressful surprises. Here are four tips to help you avoid common concrete mishaps.

Order Enough Concrete
It’s always better to have too much concrete than not enough. When you’re calculating how much concrete you’ll need for your project, be sure to add an extra 10-15% to your order just to be safe. That way, if there are any unforeseen delays or challenges, you won’t find yourself halfway through your project with no concrete left.

Ensure a Proper Foundation
One of the most important things you can do when working with concrete is to make sure that the foundation is properly prepared. That means clearing away any debris, leveling the area, and making sure that the ground is compacted and free of any loose soil. A solid foundation will make it easier to pour your concrete and will help ensure that your finished product is strong and durable.

Use the Right Mix
Not all concrete mixes are created equal. The type of mix you use will depend on the intended purpose of the concrete. For example, if you’re using concrete for a structural application like a foundation or load-bearing wall, you’ll need to use a mix with a higher ratio of Portland cement to aggregates like sand and gravel. If you’re using concrete for a non-structural application like paving or flooring, you can use a lower ratio mix. Be sure to consult with your supplier or contractor to determine the best mix for your project. Some mixes are ready to go, like those from Maitland Ready Mixed Concrete Pty Ltd, making it easy to start work right away.

Finish it Off Correctly
The finishing touches are just as important as the prep work when it comes to concrete projects. Be sure to smooth out any bumps or irregularities before the concrete sets, and don’t forget to allow for proper curing time so that your finished product is strong and long-lasting.

Concrete doesn’t have to be complicated. By following these tips, you can avoid some of the most common mistakes made when working with concrete. With proper preparation, you can ensure that your next construction project is a success!
